The riveting story
Before welding, the icons of American industry — skyscrapers, bridges, the Empire State Building's ten million rivets — were built one rivet at a time. Brutally simple, beautifully precise.
A riveting gang was four people in perfect sync: a heater, a catcher, a bucker-up, and a driver. The heater fired rivets until they glowed orange-hot and tossed them — sometimes across dizzying gaps, hundreds of feet up — to the catcher. The gang had seconds to drive each one home while the steel was still soft. As it cooled it contracted, pulling the plates together into connections stronger than the parts they joined.
The orange glow was the signal. Too cold and the rivet wouldn't set; too hot and it lost its integrity. Orange meant now — ready, right, time to move.
